Mannyman Goes Electric

Mission for 2007 Accomplished: Convert an ICE to an EV.

Hi my name is Manny. In March 2007 I picked up a nice '69 VW pan with upgraded disc brakes, shocks and an electric motor already mated to the tranny. I also acquired a '71 pan/'74 SuperBettle ICE based/'79-'80 styled Bradley GT2 (non-electric version with an '88 title.) from eBay. Took pretty much the whole month to get legal (not me, I was born here) with the DMV and CHP. Now the fun begins. Update: EV completed in December 2007

Mission Completed with 1 week to spare!

EV Grin

Took it for a test drive today for the 1st time.
There is still a some more work to do before I take it home, but it is now a fully functioning Electric Vehicle. Here's a re-cap.

Engine In.

Engine out.

Electric Motor In ....
plus Belktronix EV System (Controller, DC/DC, Battery Charger, Pot Box, Contactor, Fuse, Vehicle Integrator.)

Ok, here' some video.

I offered Bob, 1st drive, but as he didn't convert it, he wasn't willing to drive it out on the street. :P
Here I am taking it out into his Ramona neighborhood.

I told Bob the brakes were a bit squishy (technical term for not at all like power brakes). So He gets in to try them out. Luckily they work or else that would have sucked. It would have been a more exciting video though...

Great Job! My Saab EV is close to completion but has taken about 2 1/2 years thus far. Email me at: saxmandj(at)charter.net and we can share thoughts on our hardware choices. Mark

Congratulations on completing your EV! Will you drive it to Electric Dragin?

Hi Mark,
I hope you join the private Belktronix Google Group,as we can all learn from you.

Hi Peter,
Yes, Electric Dragin was a prime motivator for finishing. I made a sedate daily commuter,so I'm gonna have my a** handed to me by Mike Kadie who has an 11" motor and a 2K Zilla plus lithium batteries. But hey, anything for the kids...

Why I'm doing this.

Yeah, I care about the environment as much as the next guy. And yeah, I'm a nerdy geek. But, when it comes down to it, what really made me spend my free time and money on this endeavor, is knowing that: every time I put in any gas in my car, some money (a penny is too much) is going to people that want to KILL our kids.
"You don’t have to be a military strategist on the order of Sun Tzu or Carl von Clausewitz to understand: It is a bad idea to fund your enemy’s war effort. But every time we fill the tanks of our cars with gasoline we put money in the pockets of terrorists intent on killing Americans."
